Series I contains 7500 questionnaires arranged alphabetically; series II consists of photographs, copies of discharges, seperations papers, diaries, memoirs, clippings, and books; series III contains donor agreements; series IV contains office files for the project coordinators; series V is a small file of questionnaires received several years before the bicentennial.

The Tennessee State Library was established in 1854 and was joined with the Department of Archives and History in 1919 creating the Division of Library and Archives within the State Department of Education. In 1982 the responsibilities of the division were transferred to the Secretary of State, creating the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
